THE STORY :-
The story begins in 14th century Tangiers, with a restless but nonetheless idealistic young man named Ibn Battuta. Born into a family of Islamic legal scholars and highly respected Qadis (Judges), life was good for the young Battuta. Tangiers, being a port city, was host to many travelers and merchants who often shared their adventures in foreign lands, of strange and exotic cultures extending beyond the walls of Tangiers. Battuta was very much intrigued and inspired by these stories and was earnest to experience the adventures for himself. Endowed with an insatiable desire, Battuta set off from the comforts of Tangiers at the young age of twenty one on a pilgrimage to Mecca and did not return for the next 24 years before continuing on his journeys again.
Thus, began Battuta's historic journey across the known Islamic world and beyond, covering no less than 75,000 miles of land and sea. His journey took him throughout North Africa, Syria, Persia, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, India and as far as China, surpassing the greatness of his predecessors including that of Marco Polo. Battuta returned to Tangiers at the court of the Sultan almost thirty years later and dictated accounts of his journeys to a scholar named Ibn Juzay. These accounts are the only source of information unfolding Battuta's adventures. The title of the legendary manuscript may be translated as A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling, or famously known as the Rihla or "The Journey"
